Ethereum Co-Founder Vitalik Buterin Backs 'Formal Verification' To Harden Crypto Against AI Threats
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has backed an AI-powered solution to help combat the AI threat to cryptocurrency security. "Formal verification," which is the use of mathematical proofs to verify that software works as intended, can help make blockchain protocols more secure, Buterin said in a May 18 blog post . He added that it can allow users to independently verify and trust the code. However, Buterin says advances in AI now make it more practical by automating the process. He said AI models can write the code and prove desired properties simultaneously. However, Buterin cautioned that formal verification is not foolproof, citing risks from developers failing to verify parts of the code or a critical property, as well as hardware limitations. Still, Buterin said the process is particularly useful in situations where the development process is more complex than the desired outcome. He pointed to planned Ethereum upgrades around post-quantum cryptography and zero-knowledge technology as examples. Trending: What If Your Investment Income Didn't Rely Entirely on Market Swings? Some Investors Are Taking a Different Approach Buterin’s post comes against a backdrop of worrying decentralized finance hacks and panic about how AI models like Anthropic’s Claude Mythos could exploit software . Against this backdrop, many are growing pessimistic about the future of open-source and cybersecurity. "I have a much more optimistic vision of the future of cybersecurity," Buterin said. "I think the challenge brought by powerful AI bug-finding is a serious challenge, but it is a transitional challenge. Once the dust settles and we get into the new equilibrium, we will get to something far more defense-favoring than what we had before."
